Panel Calls for a New Research Reactor

Posted at 07/15/10 - 11:26 AM

A panel of experts has called for a new research reactor. The panel included representatives of nuclear energy and materials research with neutron beams.

Notably, the President of the Canadian Nuclear Association said, "A national investment is needed to replace the NRU reactor at Chalk River," said Denise Carpenter, President of the Canadian Nuclear Association.

"Research and education is at the heart of Canada's science and innovation agenda. Investments in R&D infrastructure for projects such as a new research reactor will ensure Canada's material science and nuclear technology expertise is maintained at a world-class level," added Ms. Carpenter.

You can read the news release and Ms. Caprenter's speaking notes on the website of the Canadian Nuclear Association Here (see July 2, 2010).

The Panelists included:

  • Bruce Gaulin, President of the Neutron Scattering Society of America, and Director of the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research at McMaster University.
  • Thom Mason, Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
  • Denise Carpenter, President of the Canadian Nuclear Association.
  • Basma Shalaby, President of the University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering, and Professor of Engineering Physics at McMaster University.
  • Ben Rouben, Executive Administrator, Canadian Nuclear Society.
  • Dean Chapman, representing the proposed Canadian Neutron Source at the University of Saskatchewan.

The panel was part of the American Conference on Neutron Scattering conference held in Ottawa at the end of June.
