New Group Proposes New Ideas

With the federal government planning to restructure Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and split off the CANDU reactor business from Chalk River Laboratories, the future of Canada's top nuclear research facility hangs in the balance. 

In response, last October a group of scientists, technicians, engineers and others who have an interest in Chalk River Laboratories came up with a bold vision: transform CRL from a lab mainly focused on commercial reactor research, into a new national laboratory with a broad mandate, centred around a new multi-purpose research reactor.

Gordon Tapp, president of the Chalk River Technicians and Technologists and the spokesman for the Chalk River Employees Ad hoc Task force for a national laboratory (CREATE), said they are hoping to generate public support for the cause through an online letter campaign, located on their website at www.futurecrl.ca and aimed at Canada's government leaders...
